Dear EUSD Community,
It brings me great pleasure to share with you the incredible strides we are making toward fostering Empowered Learners within our student community. This is an important competency as we all want to ensure that students are intrinsically motivated and are able to apply learning habits in all settings. Critical thinking is a necessary lifelong skill that we start developing as early as kindergarten!
At the heart of our educational Learner Profile is the belief that students should not only be recipients of knowledge, but also active architects of their own learning experiences. We are proud to witness a growing competency among our students as empowered learners as they passionately pursue their interests by directing their own inquiry and learning.
The following are the specific competencies and skills for Empowered Learners:
*I set personal and academic goals, and I reflect and adjust as needed.
*When given the opportunity, I responsibly choose what I learn, how I learn, and how I show my learning.
*I persist through challenges and I believe in my ability to grow.
*I understand how I learn and monitor my own progress, seeking help when needed.
*I ask questions, reflect on my learning and apply my insights to new situations.
I wanted to share some examples of how we are fostering this competency in EUSD:
Student-led Conferences- Many of our students participated in student-led conferences where they reflected on their learning, discussed goals and next steps in their learning for the remainder of the year.
Student Voice and Agency- Students are provided choices and options in a variety of situations. This includes things like research topics, and how they will demonstrate their learning or groupings.
Inquiry and Project-Based Learning- These both start with student-initiated questions and problems that require students to learn and create based on their specific interests.
Technology Integration- We leverage technology as a tool to facilitate self-directed learning, providing resources and platforms that empower students to explore and expand their knowledge.
Thank you for your unwavering support in our shared commitment to providing an education that empowers and inspires.
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D.
