EUSD UPDATES ~ May 30, 2025

Dear EUSD Community,

As the school year draws to a close and we prepare for a well-deserved summer break, I want to take a moment to reflect on our shared accomplishments and express my deep gratitude for your unwavering support throughout the year.

- Thanks to the incredible support of the Encinitas community, Bond Measure Z was approved— paving the way for continued investment in our schools.

- We continued our work in support of our Strategic Plan surrounding assessment practices, teacher professional development, student learning experiences, community engagement, and belongingness!

- We continued our academic areas of focus with our K-2 systematic foundations of reading instruction and the implementation of high quality math routines district-wide.

- Our Film Guild earned the prestigious Golden Bell Award for excellence in Career and Technical Education.

- We successfully implemented student-led conferences across the district, empowering students to take ownership of their learning and growth.

- We saw an increase in attendance with a decrease in chronic absenteeism.

- Our educators participated in three professional development sessions of their choice throughout the year, exploring targeted learning pathways such as multilingual learner support, classroom behavior strategies, writing instruction, literacy skills, math routines, NGSS, and the use of Artificial Intelligence in education.

- We expanded recess opportunities during lunchtime to cater to the diverse interests and needs of our students and foster a greater sense of joy and belonging. Examples of these are garden club, library time, games and crafts, organized sports, green team, and other student-led clubs.

- Board member Marla Strich was honored with the Dede Alpert School Board Member of the Year Award by the San Diego County School Boards Association.

- Our EUSD Behavioral Specialist Team received the NCCSE Excellence in Special Education Award for their outstanding professional development series on student behavior.

- More schools and students than ever before joined the exciting Math 24 program!

- Every school ran a successful afterschool choir program in collaboration with our Encinitas Education Foundation.

- Our redesigned Enrichment program offered students dynamic, weekly learning experiences across a wide range of subjects, including STEM, P.E./Yoga, Art, Music, TRAC, and Nutrition/Garden depending on the site.

- Our Child Nutrition Services team launched a daily menu of made-from-scratch breakfast items, ensuring students start their day with nutritious, delicious meals.

Thank you for making this school year one to remember. I am proud to serve as your superintendent and honored to be part of such a strong and caring community. I hope you all have a safe, restful, and joyful summer. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the fall, recharged and ready for another great year!

Warmly,

Andrée Grey, Ed.D.
Superintendent

CALENDAR COMMITTEE UPDATE

On April 22, all EUSD families and staff received an email inviting you to share your thoughts on potential adjustments to our school calendars. The calendar committee met and reviewed your feedback. At this time, the committee is waiting for San Dieguito Union High School District to formally publish their 2026-2027 calendar before making any recommendations. We expect to have more information and a draft calendar in the fall. As a reminder, any calendar changes would not take effect until the 2026-2027 school year.

BRIGHT SPOT: OLIVENHAIN PIONEER

OPE Olympics is an annual tradition, and one that brings to life our learner profile of Global Citizen and Wellness Advocate while also embodying our district values of Joy and Belonging. Each class represents a country from across the globe as they participate in this tradition of games and friendly competition. After learning about the country they represent, classes proudly carry their country’s flag as they come to the opening ceremony to kick off the day. Students sing the National Anthem and hear a motivational speech from two La Costa Canyon High School Varsity Athletes promoting sportsmanship and perseverance.

Throughout the rest of the event, classes compete in activities including tug-of-war, limbo, and potato sack races. The last event, and absolutely the favorite event for OPE students, is the relay race. Each class competes against the other grade level classes with their four fastest runners. Student runners pass the baton as their classmates cheer them on, many running alongside them on the inside of the track.

OPE PTA, parent volunteers, and OPE teachers make this event come to life every year. At the end of the day students are energized, empowered, and engaged in their campus community – Gold Medal memories we hope will last a lifetime!

CHARTER PETITION NOTICE

This notice is to inform you that EUSD has received a charter petition from North Star Waldorf Academy Charter School. Charter schools can request a local education agency for authorization to operate a school within the jurisdictional boundaries of the authorizing agency. If authorization is granted by the District’s Board of Trustees, North Star Waldorf will operate as a separate legal entity, but the District will have oversight responsibilities for the charter school.

The District will review the petition for legal compliance as well as conduct a detailed review and analysis in all areas such as curriculum and education, business and finance, liability and risk management, as well as student rights and special education. The information gathered is to determine the soundness and workability of the proposed school. The results of the review will be posted publicly on August 4, 2025. The Board will take final action on August 19, 2025. You may access the charter petition at this link or on our district website.

PUBLIC HEARING:

The District’s Board of Trustees also must also consider input from the district teachers, other district employees and the community that would be impacted by the charter at a public hearing. The public hearing in EUSD is scheduled for our regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 6:00 pm.  Input can be provided in person or can be sent in writing to the Board of Trustees at board@eusd.net. Comments submitted via email will be provided to the Board but will not be read aloud at the public hearing. No decision will be made at the June 10th meeting.

For further information or questions, please contact Kristine.Beverly@eusd.net.
