EUSD UPDATES ~ November 15, 2024
Dear EUSD Community,
I am thrilled to share that all of our school sites have been diligently working to broaden opportunities for student engagement during lunch. We are striving for a lunch recess that provides creative and enriching choices. We know that a positive recess experience can be invaluable for both social-emotional and academic growth. Each of our school sites has unique choices, with many shifting daily. Some of the options within the district include:
Library Access Libraries are open during lunch recess for students who enjoy reading, researching, or simply need a quieter place to recharge. Our Library Media Aides are available to support students with book selections and encourage their passion for reading.
Organized Sports For those who enjoy physical activity, organized sports during lunch recess allow students to participate in games such as soccer, basketball, and more. This option gives students the chance to build skills, stay active, and enjoy friendly competition with peers. With PTA and EEF support, sites partner with vendors who help facilitate these choices.
Student-Run Clubs We’re also excited about the many student-led clubs popping up on our campuses! This initiative empowers students to create and lead clubs based on their own interests. Clubs offer a structured, enjoyable environment for students to dive into topics and activities they are passionate about. One example is our Green Teams that are featured at every site.
Art Tables and/or Board games Some sites have dedicated art tables stocked with materials or tables with board games. This creative space lets students explore their imaginations and/or practice teamwork and social skills.
Lunch Bunches and other Student Connections Our TRAC teachers often have open classrooms or support students on the playground on certain days of the week. Capri also has an Empowered Kids program that supports students with setting personal goals, self-esteem, and cultivating a growth mindset.
These options are designed to foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, giving every student a place where they feel comfortable, engaged, and supported. We believe these opportunities not only enhance our students’ school experience but also contribute to their personal growth.
Thank you for your continued support. We’re excited to see our students explore these new options and look forward to all the positive impacts they’ll bring to our school community.
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D. Superintendent

Whether students want to participate in Garden Club, learn how to play chess, color and draw, or even engineer fan-propelled vehicles in Science Club, new additional lunchtime recess activities are providing options for everyone. This shift at all nine sites has cultivated a more inclusive recess environment and creates additional opportunities for students to make new friends. Thank you to our incredible teachers and staff for providing such fun and creative options for students to engage during recess!

At Ocean Knoll Elementary, the staff and students are continuing on an exciting and impactful partnership with the San Diego Botanical Garden to rehabilitate the nearby canyon, transforming it into a vibrant, educational resource. The latest phase of this partnership centers on the restoration of the canyon’s natural ecosystem, with a focus on clearing invasive species, planting native plants, and promoting biodiversity. The partnership offers a unique opportunity for students to engage directly with their local environment, gaining hands-on experience in ecology, conservation, and environmental stewardship.
Each month, a team of dedicated Ocean Knoll staff spend two afternoons to work alongside scientists and other experts from the Botanical Garden. These sessions allow teachers to be Empowered Leaners and deepen their understanding of native plant species and local ecosystems. The teachers then use this knowledge to develop curriculum that aligns with both science standards and environmental literacy goals.
The grant funding for this initiative plays a key role in supporting these efforts, allowing teachers to purchase materials and facilitate outdoor lessons. Through this collaboration, Ocean Knoll Elementary is fostering a deep connection between students and the natural world, turning the canyon into a "living lab" where students can be Global Citizens, observing ecological restoration in action, track plant growth, and participating in long-term environmental projects. It is a project that is sparking a lot of joy within our school and neighborhood community.

Board Meeting School Presentation: Paul Ecke Central
Paul Ecke Central Principal, Wes Sechrest, presented at the Board Meeting earlier this week. His presentation included a closer look at the new curriculum PEC is using, Benchmark Universe. Both the Dual Language Immersion and English-only programs use the curriculum, which has fostered a greater sense of unity and collaboration throughout the school among both students and teachers. Principal Sechrest also outlined positive outcomes and goals for the future of PEC.

LEARNER PROFILE IN ACTION - GLOBAL CITIZENS
In the weeks leading up to Election Day, students around EUSD participated in a variety of hands-on lessons about democracy and the voting process in their classrooms. Teachers utilized Scholastic News articles, writing prompts, guest speakers, mock elections, election poster presentations for book characters and more! These lessons and activities provided students with an opportunity to practice being global citizens, while learning about the importance of civic engagement. Hats off to our teachers and principals for creating meaningful ways for students to learn and engage with the democratic process!
