EUSD UPDATES ~ SEPTEMBER 27, 2024
|
|
|
Dear EUSD Community,
As new families enter EUSD, we are reminded that we should take time to share some of our district systems and practices. A common question is, “ What happens on Friday afternoons?” We know it is challenging for families to make arrangements each Friday for the modified day, but the work that happens after 12:45 p.m. dismissal has a direct impact on the quality of instruction and programs that happen for all students. Friday afternoons provide much needed release time for professional development, planning and collaboration.
Some of the recent Friday afternoon sessions included mandated training for all staff. Topics included Child Abuse Reporting, Bullying, and Workplace Violence Prevention. Additionally, certificated staff spent time reviewing our academic anchor standards along with our Learner Profile learning progressions to support lesson planning and assessment. On one Friday afternoon, all of our Educational Specialists spent time reviewing the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) process to be more inclusive of student voice. Each school site also incorporates professional development on their specific site goals and needs.
This year all of our teachers were able to choose a professional development pathway in addition to the above requirements. Just like our students, our teachers are being empowered to set learning goals in an area or topic of need and/or interest. These include topics such as working with multilingual learners, supporting students with challenging behaviors, improving writing for students, primary and upper grade literacy foundational skills, math routines, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and using Artificial Intelligence for teaching and planning to name a few.
Although there are professional development offerings that require us to utilize substitute teachers, Fridays allow ongoing professional development and collaboration within the workday. It is also the only time we can have the entire teaching staff of a school site do in depth learning or collaboration together.
Having highly trained teachers learning best practices and elevating their work across our schools benefits all children immensely. We know we truly have the very best teachers and we want to support their continued growth during these Friday sessions. Thank you for your continued partnership.
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D. Superintendent

INTRODUCING THE NEW REPORT CARD
|
|
|
After nearly ten months of review, surveys, meetings, and revisions, we are thrilled to introduce the new report card. EUSD is proud to embark on the journey towards competency-based learning and assessment as we reflect on how student growth, student voice, and goal setting align with our Framework for the Future. As we stay focused on our vision of "Igniting the limitless potential of all learners," we will continue to grow in this work towards equitable outcomes for all students.
Please take a look at the video and additional resources listed below to learn more about what the new report card looks like, the process in its creation, and how it better supports the District's learner profile and Framework for the Future. After its debut in January, we will be seeking additional feedback from parents and staff to further refine the report card as needed.

Empowering Learners Through Leadership
Flora Vista’s emphasis on leadership through civics was on full display during our 4th through 6th grade Student Council Elections last week. Each class elected two students to represent them on the Flora Vista Student Council, facilitated by 5th grade teacher, Ryan Harper and STEM teacher, Bronte Kornreich.
Several classes had as many as ten student candidates in the running, each of whom promoted their platforms during a week-long campaign that culminated in candidate speeches and student voting. With so many students willing to accept the responsibility and risk associated with running, it’s clear that classroom teachers have done an incredible job creating connected and supportive classroom environments where students can flourish.
Pictured here are student candidates from Kirsten Goyette’s 4th grade class, Ron Parks’ 5th grade class and Ryan Harper’s 5th grade class. It was obvious that rich discussions about what it meant to be an elected representative preceded the speeches. Hope-inspiring quotes from several students’ speeches included: “Thank you for voting and expressing your points of view, your voice fuels our student body.”, “I have learned that to be a successful leader you need to listen, communicate, motivate and be good at solving problems.” and finally, “We all have different interests, but the more we are there for each other, kind and supportive to each other, the better we will ALL BE!”

Did you know that EUSD school lunches are made with only the highest quality ingredients, such as grass-fed organic meats and proteins, as well as local and organic produce? Or that every pizza is made from scratch, including the marinara sauce that uses tomatoes grown at the EUSD Farm Lab?
Child Nutrition Services (CNS) Director, Lea Bonelli, recently presented at the PTA Presidents' meeting, providing an insightful look into the EUSD CNS program. Check out the presentation to learn more about the amazing meals your students are eating at school!

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION - WITH BCK PROGRAMS
|
|
|
A variety of amazing ecoliteracy projects are well underway at all EUSD elementary schools. With the support of BCK Programs, students have been exploring and learning about the wonders of gardening, recruiting new student members for school Green Teams, perfecting the art of proper waste diversion, and more.
Last week, students at Park Dale Lane harvested basil to make their own fresh pesto and helped organize their garden’s seed library. Paul Ecke Central students spent their recess collecting and learning about the impacts of litter!
ABOUT BCK PROGRAMS: BCK Programs creates and delivers environmental education programs at elementary, middle, and high schools that empower students to make meaningful changes at their school, in their community, and beyond.

San Diego Union Tribune:
San Diego Botanic Garden extends local habitat restoration partnerships with City of Encinitas and Encinitas Union School District
San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG) recently extended two key partnerships with the City of Encinitas and Encinitas Union School District (EUSD) to expand habitat restoration efforts throughout the city. The partnerships will extend conservation efforts at a number of sites along the Cottonwood Creek watershed to plant native species, improve habitats for wildlife, contribute to water and soil quality, and enhance community recreation and education opportunities. The partnerships also expand these activities into several important new locations.

Safety is the first priority of Encinitas Union School District. As such, all students who wish to ride their bicycles to school need to complete an approved bike safety course and permit application for the 2024-2025 school year.
SAFETY COURSES:
Students must complete an approved safety course in order to receive their bike permit. EUSD has partnered with the San Diego Bike Coalition again this year. They have been providing general bicycle general safety assemblies at all of the nine school sites. Just like last year, all students have been required to attend these assemblies regardless of applying for a permit or not. This straightforward information is relevant to everyone and is something that will help keep our students safe at or away from school. Most school's have already completed their assemblies this year, however, we will be offering two make-up assemblies at later dates for any students who are absent for their site’s assembly. Parents will be notified of the make-up assembly dates as soon as they are scheduled. Additional safety training such as classes put on by the Carlsbad Police Department, City of Encinitas, or the City of Carlsbad will also be acceptable if your student was unable to attend their school safety assembly.
PERMITS:
Students are required to fill out the permit application with their parent/guardian even if they did so last year. These permits are available on the EUSD website under the bike/e-bike safety page HERE. Once students have completed the required safety course and have submitted their permit application, they will receive a new ID tag for their bike. Please reach out to your child's school if you have any questions about this process.
DATE TO BE COMPLETED BY:
Students have until October 28th, their first day back from fall break, to complete an approved bike safety course, submit a permit application, and have the tag attached to their bike. If students have not completed these necessary steps before that date, they will not be permitted to ride their bike to school until they have done so.
