Dear EUSD Community,
As we conclude the first week of the school year, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate the incredible start we've had together. The energy and enthusiasm across our schools have been truly inspiring, and it’s been wonderful to witness our students and staff dive right into learning and activities.
This week I saw our teachers, support staff and PTAs all focused on building connections and a sense of community. At the classroom level, it is important for our students to build new relationships with their classmates and for our teachers to get to know each child’s interests, strengths and goals. I saw students creating common agreements and class expectations together. I saw lots of team building, “getting to know you” activities and collaboration in every classroom. I also saw teachers sharing about themselves with students in unique ways like quizzes and interviews! It puts students at ease when they truly get to know their teacher as a person and they are able to find that connection. Whether it is a common love of football, or a favorite food of ice cream, or having grown up here in Encinitas - children love knowing they have things in common with their teacher. Building strong connections is a priority for our staff. Establishing a positive relationship from the start can make a significant impact on a student’s academic and personal growth.
A big thank you to our PTAs who really outdid themselves welcoming new and returning families. From signs and photo booths, to coffees and playdates, I know building that sense of a school community is so important for all families to feel welcome and a sense of belonging. I know every family is busy with the start of school, but our PTA Presidents and their board members take on so much extra to make the start special for all. We are so appreciative.
As we look ahead, I am excited about all that this year holds for our students and staff. Many of our schools have Back To School Night next week and I hope you will join us for this important and informative event. I know this remarkable first week is just the beginning of an extraordinary year.
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D. Superintendent

EUSD Values: Joy, Belonging, Integrity, Service and Innovation
|
The Summer Language Academy (SLA) thrived this year. More than 140 students participated in the four-week program. Small class sizes and additional instructional aides allowed for students to receive more individualized support in their Spanish or English language skill progressions. Teachers utilized UFLI and Lit Camp curriculum, providing consistent instruction between all grade levels and classes at SLA. The “camping” theme was used in every classroom, where students enjoyed morning campfire chats/lessons and other camp-themed language learning activities.
In addition to classroom instruction, students participated in a variety of enrichment activities like P.E., library, and art. Each student also had the opportunity to engage in reader’s theater, which cumulated to a performance for their peers and families. These additional enrichment activities all served as an extension to what they were learning in the classroom, allowing them to practice their language skills in different settings.
A huge thank you to the Educational Services team and the incredible SLA staff for making the program so successful!

BOND MEASURE Z - FACILITIES IMPROVEMENTS
|
Encinitas Union School district is committed to providing safe and functional learning spaces for all students. Due to aging school facilities, critical maintenance upgrades need to be made at all sites including plumbing, drainage, electrical, technological and safety improvements. Additionally, undersized classrooms and other learning spaces require major expansions in order to meet student needs.
For these reasons, the Encinitas Union School District Board of Education has placed Measure Z, a $158.3 Million general obligation bond measure, on the upcoming November 2024 ballot. If approved by voters, funds will be used to make crucial renovations and modernizations at all EUSD schools. To learn more about the bond measure and potential facilities projects if passed, please click on the link below.
The bond measure resolution was approved by the EUSD Board of Trustees on May 14, 2024, to be included on the November 5, 2024 election ballot.

Encinitas Unveils Student-Designed Art Mosaic Panels At El Portal Undercrossing
|
Community members and leaders gathered last Saturday at the El Portal pedestrian rail undercrossing for the unveiling of an extensive art installation. In collaboration with students from Paul Ecke Central Elementary and San Dieguito Academy, Campana Studios and SDA art teacher, Jeremy Wright, worked to hand-craft mosaic art panels for the underpass. The theme of the artwork is centered around different pieces of Encinitas history and includes 17 panels, tile ribbons and two cairns. The art pieces are STUNNING! One of our favorite mosaics even included a teacher leading their students to Paul Ecke Central.
More than 150 students use the undercrossing to get to and from school each day. Due to their frequent use of the underpass, it was only fitting that PEC students assisted in concept development for the artwork. A student leadership team at PEC was created to lead out design creation for the project. These students went classroom to classroom collecting ideas and feedback from their peers, before completing final design mockups. Their artwork served as a detailed blueprint for Jeremy Wright and SDA art students when creating the mosaic panels. Additionally, the artwork includes the thumbprints of every student who attended PEC last year. Students also collected a variety of “found objects” that were used as pieces of the mosaic panels.
If you ever find yourself in the Leucadia area, be sure to check this incredible addition to Encinitas!

2024-2025 BIKE SAFETY PROGRAM
|
All students who wish to ride their bicycles to school will need to complete an approved bike safety course and permit application for the 2024-2025 school year.
SAFETY COURSES:
Students must complete an approved safety course in order to receive their bike permit. EUSD is partnering up with the San Diego Bike Coalition again this year. They will be providing general bicycle general safety assemblies at all of the nine school sites. Just like last year, all students will be required to attend these assemblies regardless of applying for a permit or not. This straight forward information is relevant to everyone and is something that will help keep our students safe at or away from school. These assemblies will be scheduled as early as possible so that everyone will have received their training and had permits issued by Fall Break. We will be offering two make up assemblies at later dates for any students who are absent for their site’s assembly. Additional safety trainings such as classes put on by the Carlsbad Police Department, City of Encinitas, or the City of Carlsbad will also be acceptable.
PERMITS:
Students will again be required to fill out the permit application with their parent/guardian even if they did so last year. These permits are available on the EUSD website under the bike/e-bike safety page found HERE. Once students have completed the required safety course and have submitted their permit application, they will receive a new ID tag for their bike.
DATE TO BE COMPLETED BY:
Students have until October 28th, their first day back from fall break, to complete an approved bike safety course, submit a permit application, and have the tag attached to their bike. If students have not completed these necessary steps before that date, they will not be permitted to ride their bike to school until they have done so.
