EUSD UPDATES ~ September 5, 2025

Dear EUSD Community,

As part of our Framework for the Future Strategic Plan, EUSD has prioritized redefining and improving community engagement. One area of this targeted outcome is to engage with our community to support and promote the learning of all students. We value your partnership and strive to provide family workshops that will support and inspire parents and guardians. Our goal has been to not only increase our offerings, but to also make them relevant to the needs of our families. We are excited to offer the following workshops to all families this year:

-Technology & Kids, Oct. 15th at 6:30 pm, at El Camino Creek:
Learn the ins and outs of your child's online world through a dynamic presentation and Q&A with Digital Wellness Educator & Screen Time Consultant, Julia Storm.

-Internet Safety, Nov. 5th from 5:30-7:00 pm, at El Camino Creek: Presented by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, gain valuable insight on how to protect your children from online dangers.

-Artful Conversations, Jan. 14th from 5:00-7:00 pm, at Olivenhain Pioneer: Presented by the National Conflict Resolution Center, learn effective communication strategies, including how to handle challenging conversations with your children.

-The Bystander Challenge, Feb. 25th from 5:00-7:00 pm, at El Camino Creek: Presented by the National Conflict Resolution Center, learn how to empower your children to become "upstanders," and how to take action when they see inappropriate behavior.

-Drug Awareness, April 15th from 5:30-7:00 pm, at Olivenhain Pioneer: Presented by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, gain an understanding of youth drug use in the community, including a focus on vaping.

Love and Logic Parenting Series: All sessions are from 6-8 pm at Mission Estancia
Presented by the EUSD Behavior Specialists & Student Support Services Team, Love and Logic® is a six-part parenting series designed to help make parenting fun and rewarding, instead of stressful and chaotic.
-Session 1: Putting an End to Arguing, Back-Talk, and Begging, Oct. 8th
-Session 2: Teaching Responsibility Without Losing Their Love, Oct. 15th
-Session 3: Setting Limits Without Waging War, Oct. 29th
-Session 4: Avoiding Power-Struggles, Nov. 5th
-Session 5: Guiding Kids to Own and Solve Their Problems, Nov. 12th
-Session 6: Teaching Kids to Complete Chores Without Reminders and Without Pay, Nov. 19th

I would like to thank our Educational and Student Support Services teams for curating such an incredible slate of options for families. Please do not hesitate to share other topics for us to consider in the future. We look forward to learning together as a district community focused on igniting the limitless potential of all learners.

Warmly,

Andrée Grey, Ed.D.
Superintendent

I ❤️ EUSD: STAFF HIGHLIGHT

The district theme for the year is I ❤️ EUSD! Each month we will share a message from a staff member, student, or community member about what they love about being part of EUSD.

As a new kindergarten teacher at Mission Estancia, I’ve been blown away by the warmth, professionalism, and joy that radiates throughout EUSD. From the moment I stepped into our new hire orientation, I could feel that this district was something special. I’ve taught in other districts before, but the level of support, collaboration, and positivity here is unmatched. It truly feels like I’ve joined a winning team—one that completely uplifts students and educators. I feel re-energized, inspired, and incredibly grateful to be part of this community.

Mission Estancia Kindergarten Teacher

BIKE & E-BIKE PERMIT PROCESS

If your student rides a bike, e-bike, scooter, or e-scooter to school, they are required to apply for a permit ID tag for the 2025-2026 school year. Students who ride to school must:
- Complete a permit tag application (must be completed each year)
- Attend an Encinitas Union School District (EUSD) approved Bike / eBike Safety Presentation.

Permit Tag Application:
Permit applications for each school can be found on the district website.

Bike/e-Bike Safety Training:

In partnership with the San Diego Bike Coalition, each school site is planning or has already completed a bike safety assembly. All students in attendance at school on the day of the assembly listen to the presentation, regardless of if they ride a bike to school or not. Dates for these assemblies can be found on the
district website. Attendance at this assembly fulfills the requirement of attending an approved bike/e-bike safety presentation. If your student is absent on the day of the assembly at their school, you can sign them up for an approved class through the cities of Encinitas or Carlsbad (links found on the district website), or attend one of the make-up safety assemblies provided by the district. Parents will be notified of the dates for the make-up assemblies as soon as they are scheduled.

Permit Tag Issuance:
Once your student has completed the application and has attended an approved training, they will receive a district-issued parking permit ID tag which will need to be affixed to their Bike, e-Bike, or scooter. ID tags will be issued through your school’s front office.

Deadline:
Students have until October 27th, their first day back from fall break, to complete an approved bike safety course, submit a permit application, and have the tag attached to their bike. If students have not completed these necessary steps before that date, they will not be permitted to ride their bike to school until they have done so.

Please reach out to your school office manager with any questions.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY IN EUSD

Dr. Amy Illingworth, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, presented an update on educational technology in EUSD at the May 2025 Board Meeting and the PTA Presidents' Meeting on August 27. Her presentation addresses common questions and concerns about screen time and iPad use, current practices, safety and security measures in place, and next steps moving forward.

Dr. Illingworth will be presenting this update at upcoming site general PTA meetings or principal chats. Each school or PTA will be sharing the date of her presentation at its site, so be on the lookout for that communication from your school. In the meantime, we invite you to view the presentation below:

BRIGHT SPOT: PAUL ECKE CENTRAL

This year, the Paul Ecke Central theme is “Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future”—a fitting focus as we spend our final year on this historic campus, prepare to co-habitat other campuses next year, and eagerly anticipate our return to a brand-new school in Fall 2027.

We opened the year with a special celebration alongside staff and families, showcasing nearly 100 years of historical photos. The images sparked nostalgia, fond memories, and admiration for how far our school has come. Stories were shared, connections were made, and there was a collective sense of pride in the role our school has played in shaping generations of students.

As a community, we are committed to honoring our legacy through projects that pay homage to this beloved campus while also gathering ideas and feedback about what will make our future school even better. From classroom activities to community-wide reflections, this journey has been one that truly involves everyone—students, staff, and families working side by side.

We are incredibly proud of what we have built together, and we know this strong foundation will guide us as we look forward to the next chapter. The past gives us roots, the future gives us wings, and together we are creating something remarkable.

~ Principal Wes Sechrest

Environmental Education - With BCK Programs

Students hit the ground running this school year and are already busy exploring environmental literacy concepts with the support of BCK Programs!

Students at all EUSD sites continue to engage in waste diversion in cafeterias, which directly supports the health of the environment. During the first week of school, students received a refresher on how to properly sort lunchtime waste via the support of BCK staff and Green Team students.

Across EUSD, students are also getting back into the gardens and the classroom to explore concepts like vermicomposting, hydroponics, litter prevention, and more!
