EUSD UPDATES ~ SEPTEMBER 13, 2024
Dear EUSD Community,
I am thrilled to take this opportunity to share with you how vital our community partnerships are to the success and well-being of our students. These collaborations — ranging from local businesses and nonprofits to universities and civic organizations — enrich our educational experience and provide critical support for our schools in ways that go beyond what we could achieve on our own.
I wanted to highlight just a few of them (there are so many!) for you and share the impact they have here in EUSD.
Encinitas Education Foundation (EEF) is a nonprofit, 501c(3) devoted to enriching the educational experience for K-6 students in the Encinitas Union School District (EUSD). Their sole function is to elevate and enrich the school experience for our students. They support our site chapters who work to provide a portion of enrichment salaries, increased intervention services and additional programs desired at each site. They work alongside EUSD to provide afterschool choir and are solely responsible for our afterschool band program.
Mission Federal Credit Union has been a business partner with us for many years. They sponsor many of our student and employee recognition programs. Additionally, they support teaching students about financial literacy.
UCSD, SDSU, CSUSM, and USD are incredible partners for us. We work directly with them to support our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs with Bilingual student teachers which has helped in having smaller ratios in those classrooms. Additionally, this provides a great hiring pool for such a speciality program. UCSD and SDSU are also our research partners working with us to analyze best practices and our district well-being.
E3 Collaborative (Encinitas Environmental Education Collaborative) is a group of non-profit organizations that work together to support the region surrounding safety, traffic, and sustainability. This group includes San Diego Botanic Garden, San Dieguito Heritage Ranch, The Leichtag Foundation, Seacrest Village Retirement Community, the Community Resource Center and the Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA.
Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA continues to be a tremendous collaborator with us. YMCA operates a preschool on Flora Vista’s campus along with our Special Education preschool. They also support our Afterschool Program at Capri. Additionally, they operate an after school childcare program at Farm Lab DREAMS campus in exchange for bussing our students daily to Farm Lab for their learning experiences.
The City of Encinitas has been a great partner as we have worked with safety. We are appreciative of their support in funding 50% of our crossing guards across the city. Additionally, they are funding all of our bike safety programs this year. We meet regularly to discuss and plan how we can ensure all students have safe routes to school. A major collaboration this year was the art created by EUSD students lining the El Portal underpass.
The City of Carlsbad similarly provides crossing guards to our Carlsbad schools and has been a driving force with bike safety courses and ensuring all students have access to safety training.
The San Diego Botanic Garden has become an exciting partner over the last few years. They wrote and received a grant to restore the canyon which is part of EUSD’s property adjacent to Ocean Knoll. Their efforts are supporting the creation of a natural habitat for native and wildlife species while providing environmental education opportunities. We look forward to the trail being a well used outdoor classroom.
We know we are so fortunate to be in a community where collaboration can thrive. Our students benefit greatly from the efforts of these partnerships and so many others.
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D. Superintendent

MEET THE EUSD BOARD OF TRUSTEES
If you are new to EUSD, we would like to introduce you to the EUSD Board of Trustees. We are fortunate to have a strong, involved Board that has been recognized for their outstanding governance by the California School Boards Association. Their passion for education and commitment to EUSD families and staff is evident in their work. Our Board is responsible for the approval of the scope and focus of Encinitas Union School District. The Board operates under the authority of the California Constitution, the State Legislature, California Education Code and the California State Board of Education. The trustees are responsible for approving the annual budget, adopting policies governing the operation of the Board, acts as an appeals board and selecting the district's superintendent. BOARD MEETING SCHOOL PRESENTATION
School presentations have started at Board meetings for the year. These presentations allow each school to highlight learning opportunities from their sites. Students from El Camino Creek presented at the most recent Board meeting about fostering a culture of joy and belonging at their school. One of the student presenters even made smiley face bobble head bands to wear during their presentation - which in turn had the whole room smiling from ear to ear. We have seen firsthand how they put these values into practice and we encourage you to look through their slides (linked below).

HUMAN TRAFFICKING & INTERNET SAFETY TRAINING
In partnership with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, EUSD held a Parent Information Night this week on Human Trafficking and Internet Safety Awareness. District Attorney Brooke Tafreshi provided valuable insight on how better to protect children from online dangers. Click the video above or the button below to watch the presentation. A version of the presentation with subtitles in Spanish will be available shortly. Please check back in a few days at the link below or in this newsletter if you are in need of Spanish subtitles.

EUSD Values: Joy, Belonging, Integrity, Service and Innovation
Every year, ECC adopts a site theme that guides our focus and activities. This year, our theme highlights two of EUSD’s core values—joy and belonging. These foundational experiences are vital to shaping a child's academic success, emotional well-being, and overall development.
When children experience joy in learning, they become more engaged, motivated, and open to exploring new ideas. Joy in the classroom sparks creativity, nurtures curiosity, and instills a lifelong love for learning.
Equally important is the sense of belonging. Feeling like a valued member of the school community is crucial for a child's self-esteem and social development. When students feel that they belong, they are more likely to participate actively, form positive relationships, and tackle challenges with confidence. This sense of belonging also helps reduce feelings of isolation and anxiety, fostering a supportive environment where every child can thrive.
We kicked off the school year with a student-led spirit assembly and concluded the day with a community ice cream social. Looking ahead, we are excited for our September activities, including a book fair, Start with Hello Week, grade-level Parents' Night Out Social, and a school-wide community carnival.
We are thrilled to embark on this journey with our ECC families, fostering joy and belonging in every student. Together, we can create an inclusive community where each child feels celebrated, supported, and inspired to achieve their best.

FIRST STUDENT VISITS AT FARM LAB
The Farm Lab DREAMS campus had its first student visitors of the year. Last week, fifth graders from La Costa Heights had the opportunity to experience a three-day Water Wise learning program, and participated in a variety of hands-on research and design projects including building and testing water filters, pumps, and desalinator prototypes. Every student in the district will have the opportunity to visit Farm Lab, with each grade level participating in different eco-literacy and/or wellness based learning experiences. These units allow students to work on every learner profile competency while at Farm Lab: Innovative Thinker, Confident Collaborator, Skilled Communicator, Wellness Advocate, Global Citizen, and Empowered Learner. A huge thank you to the incredible Farm Lab staff for their work to make this innovative and immersive experience so meaningful for our students. *The photos below show students designing and testing their desalinator prototypes.*

Our incredible partners at the Assistance League of Rancho San Dieguito once again sponsored the Operation School Bell program. This year, more than 400 students were selected by their schools to participate in the program. Operation School Bell contracts with the Encinitas Target Store to provide each child with $100 of new school clothes and shoes. We express our gratitude to the Assistance League for their continued support of our students, as well as to our school community liaisons for their direct work with the receiving families.
