EUSD UPDATES ~ January 31, 2025
Dear EUSD Community,
I am excited to share that this summer marks the beginning of a new chapter for our schools, thanks to your unwavering support of our bond, Measure Z. Your investment in our students and schools will allow us to create improved learning environments and address critical infrastructure needs across the district.
As we embark on this journey together, we want to keep you informed about what to expect. Phase 1 of the bond projects will begin this summer and includes several key initiatives aimed at enhancing our schools. Additionally, we are pleased to announce that the rebuilding of Paul Ecke Central School is scheduled to commence in the summer of 2026. These projects reflect the priorities set by our Board of Trustees and are a testament to our commitment to delivering on the promises made to our community.
It is important to note that the bond projects will be completed over time as the bonds are sold and we receive the proceeds. This phased approach allows us to thoughtfully plan and execute the work, ensuring that we maximize the benefits for our students and community.
To ensure transparency and provide opportunities for dialogue, we will be hosting Spring Superintendent Chats at all school sites. These sessions will give you a chance to ask questions, share your thoughts, and learn more about the bond projects and their impact on our schools. Details about the dates and times of these chats will be shared soon.
Thank you once again for your trust and support. Together, we are building a brighter future for our students and schools. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Superintendent Chats and working collaboratively to bring these projects to life.
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D. Superintendent

BRIGHT SPOT: PAUL ECKE CENTRAL
Kindness Week at Paul Ecke Central Elementary is a heartwarming celebration designed to foster positive character traits, strengthen community connections, and encourage mutual respect among students and staff. Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of engaging activities aimed at cultivating empathy and compassion. Highlights included creating a school-wide kindness chain, where students wrote kind words or deeds on colorful paper links, symbolizing the strength of unity and goodwill. Classroom kindness Bingo promoted random acts of kindness, while bracelet-making gave students a tangible reminder of the importance of being kind. Students also expressed gratitude by crafting heartfelt thank-you cards for staff, reinforcing the power of appreciation. Be Kind stickers further spread the message, reminding everyone to practice kindness in their daily interactions.
A school-wide assembly featuring a magician with an anti-bullying message captivated students and provided a memorable lesson on the value of treating others with respect. Each morning at drop-off, lively music set a cheerful tone for the day, creating an uplifting atmosphere. The week concluded with a special gesture from the staff: kindness tunnels, where teachers and staff formed lines to cheer and high-five students as they arrived at school, sending them into the day with smiles and encouragement. Kindness Week not only brought joy to the school community but also nurtured essential life skills like empathy, respect, and gratitude, leaving a lasting impact on everyone involved.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION - WITH BCK PROGRAMS
With the support of BCK Programs, EUSD students are continuing to engage with important environmental education projects!
The Green Teams at Paul Ecke Central and Capri have been helping students sort their waste at lunch, in addition to completing weekly litter pickups on campus.
At Flora Vista, 3rd grade students have been helping maintain their school’s garden by regularly raking leaves, which are then added to their compost bin, in addition to sifting the compost on a regular basis.
6th grade students at Ocean Knoll have been learning about the importance of native plants, and have also been helping restore Ocean Knoll Canyon by removing invasive ice plants!

LEARNER PROFILE IN ACTION: FLORA VISTA SCIENCE FAIR
Flora Vista’s first ever K-6 Science Fair was a huge success! Participation in the fair was optional for every student, so all projects showcased were 100% student-driven and created at home. The fair highlighted just how creative, curious, and talented our EUSD students are!
From magnetic slime, to testing emulsifiers, to building electric light models, the range of projects was incredible! Every student at Flora Vista had the chance to explore their classmates' amazing work and learn more about the scientific method. It was inspiring to see so many students prepared to share their discoveries.
Student scientists demonstrated all six of the learner profile competencies including empowered learning, innovative thinking, skilled communication, global citizenship, confident collaboration, and wellness advocacy through their projects and presentations.
A huge thank you to 5th grade parent Erica Pedersen for envisioning this event and working alongside STEM teacher Bronte Kornreich to make it a reality.
