EUSD UPDATES ~ December 13, 2024
Dear EUSD Community,
As the year comes to a close, I find myself filled with gratitude and pride as I reflect on the incredible strides we have made together in 2024. This year has been marked by growth, resilience, and collaboration, and I am thrilled to share some of the milestones we have achieved as a district.
One of the most significant accomplishments this year was the successful passage of our Bond Measure Z which will provide critical funding to upgrade our aging facilities, enhance campus safety, and create modernized learning environments that inspire excellence. This achievement was made possible by the unwavering support of our community, and we are eager to begin these transformational projects.
We were also honored to receive the prestigious Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association for our innovative Film Guild program. This recognition is a testament to the creativity and dedication of our educators, who continue to implement programs that drive meaningful outcomes for our students and highlight their personal interests and talents.
Student attendance showed significant improvement this year, a result of focused efforts to ensure every child has consistent access to high-quality learning and feels a sense of belonging. Additionally, our English Language Learners demonstrated remarkable progress on the California School Dashboard, reflecting the effectiveness of our targeted support programs and the commitment of our staff to equity in education.
None of this would have been possible without the ongoing support of our families, staff, and community partners. Your dedication, whether through participating in events, voting, volunteering, or simply showing up for our students, has been instrumental in making 2024 a success.
Thank you for your continued partnership and trust. I am confident that, together, we will continue to build a district that ignites the limitless potential of all learners. Wishing you a joyous holiday season and a bright and prosperous new year!
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D.
Superintendent

BRIGHT SPOT: OLIVENHAIN PIONEER
The Kindness Club and our TRAC teacher, Mrs. McCloskey, lead the Caught Being Kind Challenge at OPE. This three-week kindness initiative is designed to inspire and encourage acts of kindness across our campus. Throughout the weeks, students are recognized for acts of kindness, encouraging students to practice thinking about others and making a positive impact every day. All students and staff members are encouraged to fill out Caught Being Kind cards when they see a student engaging in acts of kindness. At the end of each week, students in the Kindness Club randomly draw four cards who are recognized for their specific act of kindness and are invited to have a celebratory lunch with Mrs. McCloskey. Students are motivated to recognize others and to do acts of kindness, bringing wonderful connections and joy to the OPE campus.

FILM GUILD WINS CSBA GOLDEN BELL AWARD
EUSD's Film Guild program was presented with the California School Board Association’s Golden Bell Award in the category of Career and Technical Education. Film Guild was chosen as a recipient for the award due to its unique approach and success in elementary education, by focusing on skills and efforts to prepare students for both career and college.
As San Diego’s first career and technical education program of its kind for elementary students, Film Guild is driven by innovation. While CTE programming is generally geared towards junior high and high school students, EUSD believes that early engagement in career-ready skill development is equally valuable for students in elementary school. Students develop filmmaking skills, collaborate, lead and explore storytelling on a variety of topics. The Film Guild curriculum is designed to give students a platform to express their voices, engage in real-world learning, foster collaboration and employ a mastery approach to learning.
A special congratulations to to Heather Montgomery, creator and coordinator of the Film Guild program, and all of our Film Guild Mentors and students.

NOW INTRODUCING: SCRATCH-MADE BREAKFASTS
CNS Director Lea Bonelli, and the Child Nutrition Services team are enhancing school breakfasts with scratch-made options, following their successful model for school lunches. EUSD already serves fresh, scratch-made lunches daily, using only the highest quality ingredients such as organic produce, grass-fed meat, and even locally sourced organic flour and grains. That commitment to fresh, scratch-made meals, is now extending to the breakfast program!
Due to space, time, and production challenges, breakfast offerings have been previously limited to quick, pre-packaged items like pastries, cereal, and fruit. Although nutritious and delicious, the goal has always been to move towards freshly prepared breakfasts. After extensive planning and creative problem-solving, CNS is thrilled to begin rolling out scratch-made breakfast items!
The new menu features nutrient-dense options like chocolate chip muffins and banana bread, crafted with hand-selected ingredients that prioritize nutritional content, quality, sustainability, and taste. For example, organic yogurt, oat flour, and cottage cheese are incorporated into recipes to boost protein and nutritional value. Recipes are also created to have lower sugar and higher fiber content, with the goal of providing healthier options to fuel children for the start of their day. Throughout this process, CNS has worked closely with students, gathering feedback to fine-tune recipes and ensure the best possible experience.
So far, scratch-made chocolate chip muffins have joined the weekly breakfast rotation, with more exciting recipes to be introduced in the coming months! Students will also be seeing protein packed options like egg bites, breakfast sandwiches, and hand-rolled vegetarian breakfast burritos.
*As a reminder, breakfast is free for all EUSD students, and is served before school starts at each site, typically between 7:30 and 8:00. Please check with your child's school office for exact times and details about breakfast service.*

LEARNER PROFILE IN ACTION - SKILLED COMMUNICATORS & CONFIDENT COLLABORATORS
Each spring, students, staff, and families are invited to complete a survey that helps shape the direction and goals of the EUSD Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). These surveys provide the district with valuable feedback on programs, spending, and areas of focus.
In an effort to make the student survey more comprehensive, Assistant Superintendent Amy Illingworth sought input directly from students. Fifth graders in Ms. Andan’s class at LCH had the opportunity to practice being both skilled communicators and confident collaborators as they reviewed and offered feedback on how past survey questions were written. Working in small groups, students circulated around their classroom, writing their thoughts and suggestions on laminated posters that displayed the survey questions. They were encouraged to critically examine the survey and share insights on their thinking. Their feedback will be carefully considered by the Educational Services Department as the survey is updated for the spring!
For more information on the LCAP, visit our website at www.eusd.net/lcap.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION - WITH BCK PROGRAMS
With the support of BCK Programs, EUSD students are continuing to engage with important environmental education projects!
The Green Teams at Paul Ecke Central and Capri have been helping students sort their waste at lunch, in addition to completing weekly litter pickups on campus.
At Flora Vista, 3rd grade students have been helping maintain their school’s garden by regularly raking leaves, which are then added to their compost bin, in addition to sifting the compost on a regular basis.
6th grade students at Ocean Knoll have been learning about the importance of native plants, and have also been helping restore Ocean Knoll Canyon by removing invasive ice plants!
