Dear EUSD Families,

Thank you for your support as we continue to refine and improve our report card. We recognize that this represents a significant shift in how student learning is communicated, and we truly value the time many of you took to share your experiences and concerns. While we are moving forward with a standards-based grading system—designed to reflect where students are in relation to state standards—we are committed to making this system more transparent, easier to understand, and more useful in supporting your child’s growth.

We want to reassure you that this change in how we approach assessment is not a reduction in rigor, but rather a commitment to deeper, more meaningful learning that maintains—and often enhances—the quality of education our students receive. Our assessment practices remain robust and varied. Students continue to participate in both formal and informal assessments, including tests, projects, quizzes, writing samples, and more. These assessments are scored and directly aligned to grade-level standards and are used not only to determine proficiency but also to guide feedback and instruction. Students have multiple opportunities to show what they know, and teachers consider the most recent and consistent evidence when communicating progress on the report card. Additionally, the new report card is supported by the recent implementation of student-led conferences, which provide further valuable insights into student progress.

We want to recognize our incredible report card committee, which consists of 30 teachers, with representatives from all nine school sites. These educators began meeting in January of last year to redesign the report card, using feedback from parents, students, and teachers as well as the EUSD Framework for the Future to guide their work. Since the rollout of the new report card, the committee has held additional meetings to plan next steps and make adjustments based on survey results, such as simplifying the language of the anchor standards on the report card, providing more clarity on each of the progression levels, and creating supportive resources.

The report card your child will receive in June will follow the same format as the one shared in January. Updates and improvements will be reflected in the first report card of the 2025–2026 school year. We are committed to making thoughtful, research-based refinements rather than quick, reactive changes. As with any shift, this change will take time to fully implement. In the meantime, we are actively developing additional resources for both families and teachers to bring greater clarity to the current report card format. If you have any questions about your child's progress, we encourage you to continue connecting with their teacher throughout the semester.

Please review the two infographics included below for additional information. One is an outline of the report card committee’s work, the second includes common concerns found in the survey feedback and the steps we are taking to address each one. To review all of the survey results and additional resources, visit the report card page on the EUSD website. Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we continue in this process.

Sincerely,

EUSD Administration
