~EUSD Vision~

Ignite the Limitless Potential of All Learners.

In Memory of Emery Chalekian

We join the Park Dale Lane community in mourning the loss of Emery Chalekian, a beloved 6th-grade student who tragically passed away in an accident on April 25th. Our deepest condolences go out to the Chalekian family, the Park Dale Lane community, and all who knew and loved Emery. Known for her kind heart and vibrant personality, Emery’s presence brought warmth and joy to everyone around her. We join Emery’s family in honoring her memory by committing to fostering the same love and kindness she so beautifully shared with those around her.

EUSD UPDATES ~ May 16, 2025

Dear EUSD Community,

One of our intended outcomes of our Strategic Plan is redefining community engagement to better support and promote the learning of all students. Both new and existing efforts are helping to provide a wide variety of opportunities for families and the community to be active participants in the education of children.

I wanted to highlight a few this week:

- Through a collaboration with our Community Liaisons, our DELAC (District English Learner Advisory Committee), and our Special Education Parent Council, EUSD hosted the Family Fun Day & Resource Fair. We had 29 vendors providing various supports and services. Over 185 families district-wide participated!

- Another great collaborative effort was with BCK Consultants, Farm Lab and our Green Teams in their work to produce this year’s Eco-Literacy Showcase. This event ties directly to our goal of engaging students in real world learning and service projects. Students set up booths all across Farm Lab to showcase their learning on sustainability topics. Each booth was the culmination of deep learning and an opportunity for students to engage with community members to express their learning and action plans. We had the largest turnout ever.

- We concluded our Parent Workshop series in April with our Parenting Essentials Workshop facilitated by the National Conflict Resolution Center. We had over 30 parents participate in this workshop where strategies for conducting open, honest and productive conversations with children were explored. Previous workshops this year included topics like fentanyl, vaping, internet safety, human trafficking and a mental health webinar series. Let us know if there are topics you would like to see next year!

- Finally, we value our partnership with our North Coastal Council of PTAs.  Families for Equity in Education (FFEE) share their monthly newsletter which we publish in Peachjar and PTA newsletters. They include a host of community events both within our North Coastal community and within the county for families to explore cultural experiences.

It is a priority for us to ensure families have a wide range of opportunities to support their children. We could not do this without our many collaborative partners and your family support.

Warmly,

Andrée Grey, Ed.D.
Superintendent

CHARTER PETITION NOTICE

This notice is to inform you that EUSD has received a charter petition from North Star Waldorf Academy Charter School. Charter schools can request a local education agency for authorization to operate a school within the jurisdictional boundaries of the authorizing agency. If authorization is granted by the District’s Board of Trustees, North Star Waldorf will operate as a separate legal entity, but the District will have oversight responsibilities for the charter school.

The District will review the petition for legal compliance as well as conduct a detailed review and analysis in all areas such as curriculum and education, business and finance, liability and risk management, as well as student rights and special education. The information gathered is to determine the soundness and workability of the proposed school. The results of the review will be posted publicly on August 4, 2025. The Board will take final action on August 19, 2025. You may access the charter petition at this link or on our district website.

PUBLIC HEARING:

The District’s Board of Trustees also must also consider input from the district teachers, other district employees and the community that would be impacted by the charter at a public hearing. The public hearing in EUSD is scheduled for our regularly scheduled board meeting on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 6:00 pm.  Input can be provided in person or can be sent in writing to the Board of Trustees at board@eusd.net. Comments submitted via email will be provided to the Board but will not be read aloud at the public hearing. No decision will be made at the June 10th meeting.

For further information or questions, please contact Kristine.Beverly@eusd.net.

BRIGHT SPOT: OCEAN KNOLL

In April, Ocean Knoll hosted our 3rd annual Zero Waste Fest. This community event has grown each year and consists of two main parts. During the day, each class sets up a presentation around an issue they have researched, a solution they want to present, art, writing or anything else related to Zero Waste. These booths are set up on our OK Children's Farm and the whole school visits to observe the learning of other classes and grade levels.

In the evening, we host the entire school and larger community on our OK Children's Farm. While the student exhibits are still set up to experience, they are joined by local vendors who are rooted in the Zero Waste movement and local organizations who support this work. This year that included the San Diego Botanical Garden, BCK Programs, Encinitas Historical Society, EUSD Farm Lab, Plastic Beach, Nature Collective, and more.

In addition to this, we had live music, freshly made pizza in our pizza oven with farm produce and freshly made lemonade. It was a great evening that brought our larger community together to support a cause that we care about!

STUDENTS & VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR RECOGNITION EVENT

We had the privilege of honoring the 2025 EUSD Students of the Year, the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Students of the Year, and Site Volunteers of the Year at a special recognition event hosted at Farm Lab. This inspiring evening offered a chance to celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions of students and volunteers from each of our sites.

Teachers and principals shared heartfelt stories about why each honoree was chosen, highlighting the positive impact they have made on their peers and within their school communities. It was a joyful and uplifting night for everyone involved. Congratulations to all of the honorees!

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION with BCK Programs

Although the school year is winding down, EUSD students are still actively engaged in impactful environmental education with BCK Programs!

Students of all ages from each EUSD school attended BCK and EUSD’s fourth annual Ecoliteracy Showcase on Tuesday, May 6. Held at Farm Lab, students presented the environmental projects and lessons that they have been working on throughout the school year with the Encinitas community. The event was open to the public and students had the unique opportunity to share their expertise with leadership from the City of Encinitas, including Mayor Bruce Ehlers, and other local organizations. Student presentations addressed a variety of topics including compost, air pollution, litter prevention, hydroponics, food recovery, energy conservation, zero waste cooking, watershed protection, and more.

EUSD BOARD OF TRUSTEES SCHOOL SITE VISITS

Every fall and spring, the EUSD Board of Trustees visits each of our school sites to get an up-close look at student learning in action. Guided by the principal, board members tour classrooms to observe hands-on learning experiences and witness the Framework for the Future and Learner Profile come to life. These visits provide valuable insights that help guide the board’s work in supporting our schools and students. We appreciate our board members for taking the time to visit our schools, demonstrating their continued commitment to excellence and connection in EUSD.
