EUSD UPDATES ~ November 1, 2024
Dear EUSD Community,
As we approach this election day, many of our students are naturally curious and have questions about the political process. Many of our schools and classrooms are planning mock elections and/or classroom activities celebrating the democratic process. Elections can bring about important discussions, and we encourage families to also engage in these conversations with their children. It is important that we approach these talks thoughtfully, ensuring that children feel safe, respected, and supported in expressing their thoughts. Our goal as a district is to foster understanding, promote empathy, and respect diverse perspectives.
When discussing the election with children, it's a great opportunity to focus on listening and encouraging respectful dialogue. We can all highlight the importance of civic engagement and the value of every vote. Finally, we can use this opportunity to teach children how to engage constructively and respectfully, even when opinions differ.
We appreciate the role that families play in supporting our students during this time. We know conversations will come up at school and we want all children to be mindful of various opinions. By promoting open, respectful, and thoughtful conversations, we can help our children navigate complex topics and develop into informed and empathetic citizens. Thank you for your continued partnership in creating a positive and nurturing learning environment for all students.

Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D Superintendent

BRIGHT SPOT: MISSION ESTANCIA
At Mission Estancia Elementary, our 2nd graders are shining bright with an exciting, collaborative election-themed project that truly brings learning to life! It all kicked off with students diving into four picture books about elections, where they explored the fictional main characters through detailed character analysis. From there, students worked together to plan campaign posters—complete with catchy slogans, compelling character traits, and persuasive reasons to vote for their chosen fictional candidates. ME 5th graders collaborated with the 2nd graders, offering valuable feedback that helped refine their campaign poster plans. Now, they're gearing up to present these campaign posters not only to their classmates but also to kindergartners and 2nd grade families in an exhibition where everyone will cast their votes to elect the storybook "president." The celebration of this democratic process will culminate in a festive inauguration party for the winning character!
This project aligns with our EUSD Learner Profile, highlighting our students as Empowered Learners who take charge of their own education. They are Confident Collaborators, working with peers and older students to achieve their goals and Skilled Communicators by communicating important information in creative ways through their campaign posters. This hands-on, real-world experience develops Global Citizens and fosters a strong sense of community as students connect with 5th graders, kindergartners, and 2nd grade families. Students are building essential life skills all while learning social studies content in an engaging and realistic way.

Maintenance & Grounds Fall Break Projects
During school breaks, our dedicated maintenance and grounds crews work diligently to complete essential projects across our school sites. This proactive approach ensures that our facilities remain safe, welcoming, and conducive to learning. From refreshing paint and making repairs to enhancing outdoor spaces and landscaping, these efforts not only improve the overall appearance of our schools but also address necessary upkeep that can be challenging during the school year. We appreciate the hard work and commitment of our crews, who take advantage of these quieter times to ensure our campuses are ready for students and staff when they return.

Film Guild Program Wins Golden Bell Award
The California School Boards Association (CSBA) has named the EUSD Film Guild Program as a Golden Bell Award winner! The program won in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) category award for its successful models, strategies and supporting data focused on efforts to prepare students for both career and college.
As the first K-6 CTE program of its kind in the San Diego area, Film Guild provides fourth through sixth grade students with a chance to learn the intricacies and various aspects of storytelling through cinematography. The program started in 2015 with only a handful of students at one school, and has now increased to more than 350 participants representing all 9 EUSD schools. A special congratulations to Heather Montgomery, who created and coordinates this incredible program. Film Guild will be honored at the CSBA Golden Bell Awards ceremony in December.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION - WITH BCK PROGRAMS
With the support of BCK Programs, students at all EUSD elementary schools are making the world a better place! Here are a few highlights from this month:
Ocean Knoll’s Green Team has been helping students sort their waste at lunch, in addition to completing litter pickups on campus.
6th grade students at Capri are growing their own hydroponic crops while also learning about the fundamentals of gardening, including the importance of proper pH levels.
At La Costa Heights, BCK joined forces with the STEM teacher to provide valuable recycling training for students in grades K-3. This initiative teaches students how to identify "what goes where" at the lunchtime waste station. Along with assistance from the student Green Team, this training not only helps our school comply with waste diversion regulations, but also empowers students to make a positive impact on the planet!

Over the last several months, sixth-grade students from several schools have had the opportunity to attend a week-long overnight visit to Camp Cuyamaca. Operating continuously since 1946, Cuyamaca Outdoor School is California's largest and longest-running camp for sixth graders, welcoming over 11,000 students annually. Run by the San Diego County Office of Education, students participate in a variety of outdoor learning experiences, such as hiking, rock climbing, archery, team-building challenges, geocaching, woodworking, and much more.
We want to thank our incredible teachers, instructional assistants, and other staff from each school who accompanied their classes for the week—6th Grade Camp wouldn’t be possible without their support! Check out the photos below of our happy campers from Mission Estancia, Flora Vista, and Park Dale Lane.
